You should consolidate the thumbnail bar by including options that allow users to disable some of the elements that make up the thumbnail bar. For instance, there are words above and below each thumbnail. You could make it to where hovering over each thumbnail would temporarily display those words “inside” of the thumbnail. This would allow for bigger thumbnails because there isn’t so much vertical space being used for the words.
Also, the black toolbar which harbors the “configure” “filter thumbnails: off” etc… that should be within the users power to disable, or better yet–toggle off and on when needed. The whole point is to make the thumbnail bar use less vertical screen real estate while maximizing the potential of the only feature in this add-on that makes it worth using… and that would be the thumbnail previews.
Sure, one could simply click to drag and resize the thumb strip bar so that thumbnails grow larger or smaller, but because everything else in the way causes the thumbnails to shrink so small, it seems as if you’re being penalized for trying to maximize your screen real estate.
Also… by making the text hover, this eliminates the need for words to start off like this “words words” and end like this “words words …” (dot dot dot). Mouseover text hovering can use as much screen real estate as possible, but this screen real estate is not occupied permanently, which will satisfy more people than you can imagine. lol
One last thing, I’ve noticed that the thumbnails are somewhat realtime. This comes at a cost. For one, the preview is of lesser quality because it is not using any form of bicubic resampling. I suspect it is using “nearest neighbor” resampling, due to its pixilated nature. If you take snapshots of pages and display them in thumbnails, this could potentially improve performance while improving thumbnail quality.
I hope you consider implementing some of these changes / options. I’ll be honest with you, Firefox users are used to being spoiled. We get added functionality with every extension we download and when one tiny little thing does not meet our expectations, we ditch extensions (sometimes hastily). I admit, I uninstalled this extension a long time ago, but I have come back to it because I realize that it is potentially a great add-on… it just needs bit of work.
I love this program — but I have one suggestion. I would like it to automatically save one strip back (eg. under a heading such as “previous”). I find I sometimes inadvertantly open a new search before I saved the part I wanted from the old one. Thanks
Neil - Thank you so much for your valuable feedback and the follow up visualization. It is exactly this kind of feedback that really helps us understand what our customers our thinking when using the program.
Sue - Actually, for people like me that accidentally close their firefox before saving the TS we put in a failsafe. Your most recent session is saved in Documents and Settings\”user name”\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\8kopp6du.Default User\chrome\filmstrips directory. However, this is overwritten each time your quit.
I would use thumbstrip if the thumbstrip was a lot smaller. I would like to be able to make it as small as my google bookmark toolbar.
The Thumbstrip takes up way too much of the screen to keep it on and if I minimize it I may as well use the back features instead of thumbstrip.
I like the idea though, I hope you keep improving it.

Disclaimer: I have not read any docs, just looked at the page before downloading.
Two things …
1. No easy way to group thumbnstrips. Need to show an icon for the category and drag new thmbstrips to it. And basic mgmt of that.
2. Adding the current page seems hap-hazard. Recording on, it eventually ends up down there with the others. I would like to drag it down there - just feels more sure. I can’t wait until I see it. When a new site goes there it is just among all the others.
I do see a ‘filter’ and will try and see what that does.
Just not as useful (at all for me) as I expected.
the thumbnail viewer is really helpful especially when i am doing homework that deals with keeping track of multiple websites it makes it easier to go back to all of them rather than going to the back button or searching through the history with the thumbnail its right there it looks all good on my end
Currently, the only way to do what you want to is to save a thumbstrip and then open it before your next browsing session. The only issue with that method is the time it can take to load and refresh a very large ThumbStrip. Also, thanks for the great idea about viewing offline and we will look into this for a future release.
Thank you all for the valuable feedback. It has really paid off as we are now listed as a Recommended Add On at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/recommended so thanks to all of you that have helped make that possible!
gabriele - The only font that can be changed is the menu font unfortunately and that is done through changing the font preferences in Firefox. I will add it to our list of things to look at for our next release.

I was reading your EULA for Thumbstrips app for FireFox.
In the EULA you state:”and/or to the extent any Personal Information is obtained from any health plan by Tester or on Tester’s behalf through the use of the Pre-Release Software, Tester warrants that (i) Tester is providing or obtaining only Tester’s own information or the information of others which Tester is authorized to provide to third parties and/or obtain from third parties on their behalf ”
What on earth does this mean? Why is personal information related to a health plan for an application such as this?
Please explain.
and my response below:
H. Cavanaugh - the EULA is the standard Intuit EULA that covers all of our products. ThumbStrips has nothing to do with HIPPA or other health care related information. Sorry for the confusion.
I don’t like that it takes up such a large part of my web page. I would prefer not to have to scroll as much. If it could be moved to the side I would like it more.
This is great add-on and very useful. I was wondering if it can be shown on the left side vertically instead of on the bottom horizontally…. great work, keep going

As I’ve said elsewhere, you’ve created amazing software. I love it because you’ve made my personal browsing more fun.
“I’d love to see your software succeed and become a defacto standard of sorts. If it was widespread on Internet Explorer (meh!), Firefox, Safari… it would be a great way to share your favourite sites with friends and it could also be used in business.”
I am moving into a new phase of my personal blogging with more frequent posts and updates. This is important to me because I’m marketing myself so I can find a good sales opportunity — a company for which I can produce profits.
I’d be grateful and both honoured and humbled if you’d swing by my blog post and leave your opinions… let me have it if I’ve gone wrong.
Also, can you feature my post in any way by, for example, either writing a blog post about it and linking to it or encouraging the people you know who care about iLab and ThumbStrips to visit and give me their opinion too?
Hello!
Could you develope a filter, in order to never register in the strip an specific url or a word in the url. Only for privacy, for people that stay in the back.
Thanks, really useful.

Schmilo - if you go to the “block this site” menu and choose custom, you can type a word in the box instead of the url and it should do what you are trying. Let me know how that works out.
Wat - I’m a little surprised since we tested this on both tiger and leopard. Are you using a special theme for Firefox?
Hubert, Dantel, Chris, and Step - thanks for the suggestions, I will add them to the list we have going.
you will have to simplify the simplest for me! am I not just basically doubling up, it doesn’t store, after logging off, yet history is already there as is web search, just as easy to return to, without loosing half a page. a functioning brain is as equal if not superior, i find no use for it. but that’s just one little persons opinion and i am 12 on Tuesday.
thank you mr mozzarella i like your site, it is educational, not full of silly games and bad music.

thanks for making this software. I remember years back, oh maybe 10 yrs ago, there was a website that allowed users to surf the web by thumbnails, rather than words. This software is similar to that one.
Suggestions: instead of deleting one page/thumbnail at a time, which is time consuming, I would like to be able to draw a selection box around the ones that I want to delete, and then delete them either rghtclick/delete button. Also make a control selection so that users can select certain pics to delete. What about a drag and drop into a trash can icon.
2). instead of being on the bottom, I would prefer to have the thumbnails in the same positions as the back and forward buttons. By clicking the small drop down arrow of the back or forward button, I would like the thumbnails to appear so that I can see which one I want to go back or forward. Also this should be done for each tab in firefox. I use multiple tabs for surfing. Each firefox tab has a for/back button.
3). I like that you have a feedback button for users to make suggestions. I’ve seen too many products that lack this simple common sense feature.
4). I know that the pics can be resized by dragging the border margin up or down. However, controlling the border margin isn’t very easy. I would like to see the pics auto resize to 4x their thumbnail size by mouse over it. I’m sure you’ve seen picslens, which is an add-on for firefox. By simply mouseover any of the minipics, it should enlarge to maybe 640×480 or less, but more readable. If a user clicks on the minipics, then it should go to that site. Also if a users right clicking on the minipics, then it should have other options like: website properties, open on a new window or new tab, reload page, bookmark page, save page as, send minipic or web page with link to a folder or certain drive (internal or external).
Last, sometimes I cannot read all of the news/info due to time limit. What I like to do is bookmark a page to a ” read later folder”. Well, I would like your software to have that similar feature. Instead of scrolling back and forth, allow users to put a ticker to a minipic so that that remember which of the images is important. It’s like tagging or bookmarking the thumbnail. Sometimes firefox crashes or is closed. Next time when I restart the computer or browser, any of the minipics that I tagged, I would like it to popup to remind to go back to read it or simply delete it. Not only allow users to tag a pic, enable them to write notes so that they remember why they tagged the image or why that page was so important. Simply move the mouse over the tagged image and not only does the image gets bigger, but it also shows the user’s comments. One more suggestion, enable people to simply drag any of the minipic to any of the opened tab(s) or to the bookmark toolbar folder, which I use often. This is much faster than going to Bookmarks>>>Bookmark this page>>Bookmark toolbar folder.
Is there any update coming soon that will work the apperance themes?
I use Aquatint Black Gloss 1.0.1 by Bodizzle and the Thumstrips just dont look good.
I mean, Im able to see all the websites I’ve visited just perfectly but your product is not
compatible.
anything I can dop or anything coming soon?
Maybe I just can’t find it! When the thumbnails are in recording mode the tray takes up way too much of my screen. Can I record with it minimized? If not, I don’t know that I can use it as much as I would like to - my screen just isn’t big enough to hold the thumbnails, the menus, the toolbars, etc… I do hope someone reads this and responds. Thanks you for the brill idea!
you wouldnt belive how grateful i am i have alaptop and to back a few pages was very stressfull in the past this is so easy the only thing i can suggest and this is only because i was just on ebay so really its theyr idea passed on to you by me but ill still be glad to take the credit, lol. anyhow the images even tho are quite clear the picture of the past site in the list below could be made to automatically pop out and enlarge when you run mouse over them some of previous pages i visit all look quite similar espetially in the small view offered
hi i’m new with you guys and so far no troubles but one quick question please don’t blog this one message i don’t know if you guys can do this but can you guys and gals block some web sites that people shouldn’t look at so i don’t get angry or something else please i would really appreciate that very much thank you so much god bless you.
Great program thanks, but it conflicts a little with the addon Piclens, so Piclens freezes a bit when the pictures are taken by Thumbstrips. OS X, Mac Book Pro 2.2 Ghz.

Hi
I noticed that the Firefox add-on THUMBSTRIPS repeatedly installed a certain BACKDOOR trojan on my PC !!!!
How is this possible?
AVG removed it… and I was wondering why that program kept disappearing!
I just checked Firefox and that program is STILL being offered!

Hi Bernd,
Thanks for the notice. I scanned the versions on innovation.intuit.com and on Mozilla with several scanners, including AVG, but they came up clean.
It is possible that an existing virus injected itself into the code or the virus came from some other copy that those two official ones.
From what website did you download Thumbstrips? Most likely there’s some other virus on your system that keeps injecting itself into Thumbstrips.

Arthur and Mike: Thanks for the suggestion on creating groups, we have been brainstorming ways to execute this well.
hajo: The fonts in TS are tied to the font preference for Firefox. Try some different fonts there and let me know what you think looks best.
sean: thanks for the excellent use case

Everythings perfect. The size of the thumnails, the features. Brilliant idea.
One “Flaw”…The thumnails are not stored from. One session to the next session
I.e. If i exit firefox then re launch firefox then all previous thumnails are lost
the great thing about firefox is it already has the ability to view previously visited pages offline
It would be good if T.S. mirrored that
But great tool you have invented….i shall spread the word

When you when use Delete command (context menu) you must choose the last thumbnail, else the other thumbs are not deleted.

Great program thanks, but it conflicts a little with the addon Piclens, so Piclens freezes a bit when the pictures are taken by Thumbstrips. OS X, Mac Book Pro 2.2 Ghz.
