ThumbStrips Update 1.5.1
May 14th, 2008 – by jmandellHello All,
We are happy to announce the latest version of ThumbStrips - 1.5.1.
What did we do?
* Made ThumbStrips Firefox 3 compliant.
Check out the latest version of Firefox 3 beta 5 here, it’s great!
* Added a simple way to add comments to your thumbnails
Just right-click and select “comment”. The comments will be saved with the thumbstrip and are searchable.
* Restored the sharing feature on the thumbstrips.com website
Go to configure - Save/Share - Share this thumbstrip on intuitlabs.com. This is a feature that we would love some more feedback on. We just threw together a way to share ThumbStrips and only a few people have used it so far
* Cleaned up some JavaScript errors.
Thank you all for all the feedback and testing that you have done for this latest release. We look forward to learning more from you in the future.

Hi,
Would be nice if you could middle click with the mouse on a thumbnail and have it open in a new tab.
Seems it is trying to do just that now but fails. That is when I do this a new “loading” tab is shown for about half a second before closing.
I’m running with Firefox 2.0.0.14 .
At the moment to work around this I instead simply drag the thumbnail to the screen which causes it to open it in a new tab in the background.
Thanks,
Will

Will - thanks for the suggestion as well as the cool tip on opening a thumbnail.
John - Can you elaborate? I would like to know what you don’t like.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Umm… installed it in firefox 3, but nothing happens. It says it is installed in the addons manager, but I get no toolbar button and it doesn’t do anything. I tried to add the toolbar button with customize, but it isn’t listed among the available buttons.

This has the potential to be the solution to one of my biggest frustrations.
I want to be able to search for text across all open tabs. This is technically possible with ThumbStrips, and it’s genius, but for some reason, links opened into new tabs (via right click, control click, bookmarks, SnapLinks, etc.) are not made into thumbnails. So I would like to see all links added to the strip. That would be awesome.
I’d also like to have the option of making the strip vertical, and I would also love for the scroll wheel to move even the horizontal strip. I just hate scrolling horizontally.
Thanks for such a cool extension!

pretty much another waste of time. doesn’t really have any benefit unless you’re a person without a life. as a business tool (which is what i use firefox for) it is of no importance.

Can it be used as a sidebar?….I would like it more as a sidebar

Is there way to set ThumbStrips to automatically save each session? Better yet, a way to tie into the browsers history? Just seems like their is so much potential. I have a tendency to pop TS open when I want to look for pages I viewed a day-week-month ago, and then realize >’< that TS doesn’t save histories unless its done manually. Anyways, thanks for the effort. If it’s possible to make these features happen, or if they are already in beta, I’d be glad to help test.
Thank you, Aaron.

Also, I forget to mention this in my above posting, for better integration it REALLY must have persistence across all windows. So if I open a link in a new window instead of a tab, which I do very frequently, I should be able to open ThumbStrips and see my current sessions history. Though again, this probably ties into TS being able to access the browsers history. If at all possible can TS read Firefox’s SQLite database?
Thank you, Aaron.

I would like the title of the thumbnails be more meaningful. Instead of giving the web link like “google.com.my”, I would prefer showing the webpage title like “Thumbstrips - Google Search”.
It will be very useful if you are trying to look for pages that inside a same domain.

unfortunately, when it is active my browser main window scroll bars turn off (when I hide it they come back) so I can’t really use the thumbnails enough to say if I’d learn to need them

I’d also like to see the option of vertical thumbnails.
Also, to keep from losing screen space, would it be possible to make Thumbstrips auto-hide, such as can be done with the Windows Taskbar?
Overall, though, the concept is good; I no longer need to guess when perusing my history list.

Bug in 1.5.1, using Firefox 3 nightly on a Mac: if the server takes more than one second to send the CSS file, you’ll get a “Flash of Unstyled Content” (google it) until the CSS comes in. Apparently, your one-second timer, which paints the thumbstrip, forces Firefox to do layout, even if it hasn’t triggered “onload” yet…

the thumbnails strip scrolls too fast, will you put in some option in controlling the auto scroll speed in your next version? Thanks.

Thank you for all of the comments. We are going to be trying out a service called “Get Satisfaction” http://getsatisfaction.com/thumbstrips/products/thumbstrips_thumbstrips to consolodate all of the great questions, suggestions, and bugs that people tell us about. This should lead to a better experience for all. Feel free to check it out.

Alvin - I would suggest removing thumbstrips thgouth the tools->add ons menu in firefox. Then reinstall from scratch. Let us know if that does not work.
Jay - you can get prior versions here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/5045 but it is only the latest version that is compatible with Firefox 3. We have your suggestion for a customizable color scheme.
Aaron - thanks for the testing offer. We will keep you in mind. I will find out if we can read the SQLLite database.
Jay - great detailed bug description. We will look at that.
All - we have attempted to make ThumbStrips as a side/verticle bar but it requires more code than we can handle right now.
Thanks for the suggestions on keeping history across multiple tabs, having more useful titles on the thumbnails, scroll bar speed.
Thanks again,
Jonathan

New ideas always have huge opportunity and potential. Here are my suggestions after five minutes of play:
* Right-Click menu to Clear “Selected” thumbs or ALL.
* Properties-All, hide time stamp and/or website address
* Create tags or categories - for sorting, viewing, deleting, searching
* Create stacks or tabs to view like tags/categories
* Option to load thumbs in addition to current instead of replace
* Magnify Thumbnail while mouse hover
* Hide the Configure/Search bar. Make available in Right-Click on empty space.
* Option to record and limit one thumb per website for current session
* Load last session automatically
* Option to Automatically save each session on exit - date/time stamp.
* Save last session or auto-save session with defined name.
* Delete or Clear all auto-saved or last session.
That is enough for now!
